Mining in Mexico 2022

Mining and metallurgical industries contribute 2.3 percent of the national GDP to Mexico.  Mexico in the World.

  • It ranks 1st in silver production worldwide.
  • It ranks among the top 10 producers of 17 different minerals: 1st silver, 2nd fluorite, 3rd celestite, 3rd sodium sulfate, 3rd wollastonite, 5th bismuth, 5th molybdenum, 5th lead, 6th cadmium, 6°magnesium sulfate, 6°zinc, 6°diatomite, 6°barite, 8°gypsum, 8°salt, 8°gold, 9°copper
  • Latin America remained the main destination of investment in exploration, with 25% of the world total, Mexico was placed as the 2nd destination with the highest exploration budget in Latin America according to the annual report by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
  • According to the annual survey by the Fraser Institute, Mexico ranked seventh as an investment destination in Latin America and ranked 42nd worldwide in the investment attraction index.
  • As far as investment is concerned, the mining sector invested 3 thousand 532.62 million dollars in 2020, which meant a decrease of 24.1% compared to what was invested in 2019; the sector continues to be one of the productive branches that attract the most investment to the country.

Mining-metallurgical sector in Mexico:

  • The mining-metallurgical sector in our country represented 8.3% of the industrial Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 2.3% of the National GDP according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), in 2020.
  • With a significant rebound in precious metals that reached record levels for several years, it generated that the value of the national mining-metallurgical production during 2020 will be even higher than the value of 2019. The value of production went from 11 thousand 855 million dollars in 2019 to 13 thousand 95 million dollars in 2020, (281 thousand 515.9 million pesos).
  • At the end of 2020, 367 thousand 935 direct jobs were registered, of which the participation of women in the mining-metallurgical sector was 57 thousand 826 or 15.7%, according to the report of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
